چکیده

The survival of Nocardia corallina and the degradation of constituents were examined during periods of starvation. Organisms were harvested at the end of the growth phase and were starved, after resuspending in phosphate buffer containing Mg2+, with vigorous aeration at 30 "C. Viability fell gradually to 50 % over a period of 480 h. After 48 h of starvation the dry weight of the organisms was reduced by 35 % and the Qo, was decreased from I o to approximately I. The fall in dry weight coincided with a decrease of microbial polysaccharide from 25 % to 7 % of the initial dry weight. After this degradation of polysaccharide there was a decrease in microbial protein and a release of ammonia into the supernatant. The contribution of different constituents to the total decrease in dry weight during a period of 240 h starvation was; polysaccharide, 40 %; protein, 25 %; RNA, 6 %; total fatty acids, 5 %. Loss of viability could not be directly correlated with the utilization of any particular constituent.

Viability and endogenous substrates used during starvation survival of Rhodospirillum rubrum.

Cells of Rhodospirillum rubrum were grown photoorganotrophically and chemoorganotrophically and then starved for organic carbon and combined nitrogen under four conditions: anaerobically in the light and dark and aerobically in the light and dark. Illumination prolonged viability and suppressed the net degradation of cell material of phototrophically grown cells, but had no effect on chemotroph...

Effect of starvation on growth, histology and ultrastructure of digestive system of juvenile red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii Girard)

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of 20 d starvation on growth, survival, histomorphology and ultrastructure changes in the digestive system of juvenile red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Juveniles were divided into two groups: a food-deprived group and a control group at 9 day after hatch (DAH). Individuals were sampled at 14, 20, 29 DAH. During the 20 d fasting per...

The coordinated action of the MVB pathway and autophagy ensures cell survival during starvation

The degradation and recycling of cellular components is essential for cell growth and survival. Here we show how selective and non-selective lysosomal protein degradation pathways cooperate to ensure cell survival upon nutrient limitation. A quantitative analysis of starvation-induced proteome remodeling in yeast reveals comprehensive changes already in the first three hours. In this period, ma...

Knockdown of mitofilin inhibits autophagy and facilitates starvation-induced apoptosis in HeLa cells

Objective(s): Mitofilin contributes to the maintenance of mitochondrial structure and functions. This study was undertaken to determine the mechanisms underlying its regulation of apoptosis.  Materials and Methods: Mitofilin was knockdowned by specific short hairpin RNA (shRNA) and the stable HeLa cell clone was selected. The autophagy a...
